The bathes of Saturnia

Finally an internet cafè! We’ve been winding our way through tiny little Tuscan towns where if you say “wireless” they look at you like you’re from another planet.

For the last week, we’ve been rained upon continuously, and things in the camper decide they don’t want to work, and so it’s been a little rocky, to say the least. Now, finally, we seem to have worked through the rough edges and the camper is at least presentable for our 2 guests, Libby and Jake, arriving here in Siena in about 2 hours.

Bologna rained and rained and rained, but we had fun at Tonni’s graduation:

And it rained and rained and rained some more winding through Tuscany:

This damaged a bit our ability to really be able to get outside and create, do some artistic adventurous things, but we used the opportunity to fix the camper (I’ll post a pic of that later). We did get to see some cute little places, but most small towns had their museums closed until tourist season so we were a little outta luck there as well.

Finally yesterday it stopped raining and we were driving through an area of Tuscany called Maremma towards Saturnia and we stopped off at some Etruscan ruins…beautiful! This was like 7th century B.C. I read up on some of the mythology of the culture, super interesting. Here I am in a tomb:

There was an amazing walkway carved out of stone called the Via Cava with some cross etched into the stone from the Roman period. Very cool. Here’s a picture looking up:

And finally, after all the stress of rain and cold and stupid camper things not working, agggggghhhhhhhhhhh, a nice warm bath in the thermal hot springs of Saturnia:

Saturnia was great: free open hot springs, free camping, great weather, beautiful landscape. Not much to do other than soak, but that’s good enough for me.

  3. I go here to make a comment on your hot springs picture, which I love — you are emoting happiness big-time here — and I see a comment by my daughter, Maggie, who’s a photographer. She knows what makes a great shot!
